Todd Shail, Mary Tomlin and Michael Boggins
Four people. 212 years.
The Glasgow manufacturing facility is one of Mohawk's locations with the most employees with 50 years of tenure, and the team is holding strong. In 2019, the Virginia team added Mary Tomlin to the 50-year club.
They have four employees who have passed the 50-year mark:
• Lottie Arehart, administrative assistant – 57 years
• Mabel Poindexter, sr. lab technician – 53 Years
• Walter Duff, electrician – 52 Years
• Mary Tomlin, administrative assistant – 50 years
Mary has worked at the plant since she was 18 years old when she started in the yarn mill. But she has experience working in different areas of the commercial carpet facility.
“I moved around to a lot of different jobs for the first few years,” Mary said. “I was hired for winding when production was picking up there, and then after a few months when production slowed in that area, I went to another department when that production picked up. I worked a lot of different jobs throughout the years, but I’ve been in my current position for the last 15 of them.”
She has witnessed a lot of change at the facility throughout the years, and she also had the chance to be a part of some of those “firsts” herself.
“I was the very first woman to work in maintenance setting up machinery in the late 70s or early 80s,” she said. “No other woman had held a position in that department, but after a few years on the team they started hiring more women in those jobs. I was also the first woman to get a truck license to drive a fork lift at the plant. I was willing to work everywhere and show that I could do it.”
When asked about her favorite memories or experiences, she can’t narrow it down to just one. And, Mary has no intention to stop at 50 years. She explained that she’s happiest working, being busy and spending time around others.
“The whole thing has been a good experience all the way through,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed working here and enjoy the people I work with. A lot has changed in the industry, and new people come in while others go out, but as long as I’m physically and mentally able, I want to continue working.”
