There’s a thief on the loose.

We may not typically think of back injuries as a thief, but they can take a lot away from us – our favorite hobbies, spending time with loved ones and going to work.

In fact, back injuries are second only to the common cold for conditions or illnesses that cause people to take unexpected time away from their jobs. In addition to missed time, injured backs are often subject to re-injury and can cause a lot of pain.

While poor lifting techniques are a major cause of back injuries, the following activities may also be responsible:

  • Reaching
  • Twisting
  • Bad posture
  • Sitting
  • Tying your shoes
  • Bending

Luckily, back injuries are preventable. Some of the easiest ways you can help yourself stay healthy include:

  • Maintaining good posture by sitting or standing up straight. (Keep in mind the natural curves of your back and make sure you’re matching them.)
  • Stretching regularly
  • Conditioning your back, core and legs
  • Losing excess weight
