148.5 million pounds.
In the past decade, that’s the amount of carpet that Mohawk’s ReCover carpet reclamation program has diverted from the landfill, and that dedication to sustainable practices hasn’t gone unnoticed. The ReCover program received the GreenStep Award in the Practice/Process category from Floor Covering Weekly last week to recognize this achievement.
“It’s all about being aware and doing our part and, of course, aligning with our five tenets of sustainability: doing better together, product transparency, redefining innovation, repurpose, reuse and recycle, and thoughtful design,” Sustainability Coordinator Dionna Reynolds said. “Mohawk loves being able to connect to the communities we live, work and play in. Sustainable efforts such as the ReCover Program are a key part of the puzzle — it’s important for us to recognize what sustainability across the board does, not just for a business, but for consumers.”
Floor Covering Weekly, one of the flooring industry’s leading trade publications for more than 60 years, launched the GreenStep Awards in 2009 to recognize and promote environmental stewardship within the flooring industry.

Practice/Process Category Winner: ReCover Program
The ReCover carpet reclamation program is part of Mohawk’s commitment to sustainable business practices through the recycling of flooring. Instead of sending old flooring products to the landfill, Mohawk recovers old carpeting materials, then donates them to nonprofit organizations or recycles fiber into nylon and polypropylene pellets for the automotive parts and furniture industries. The program is currently available to commercial customers and reclamation is not limited to Mohawk carpeting.
Mohawk’s residential division has also used ReCover for its Cushion the Fight program in partnership with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day event series. After donating thousands of pieces of eco-friendly SmartCushion for participants to place under sleeping bags, Mohawk continues to utilize ReCover as a responsible solution to take back the gently-used materials and recycle them into new cushion. As part of the program, Mohawk also leverages its fleet, in tandem with its ReCover partners, to recover the cushion used at these events.
Since its inception just over a decade ago, ReCover has given new life to 148.5 million pounds—or 32.6 million square yards—of carpet. The program has grown to include 20 partners in carpet recycling across North America. Mohawk has expanded into other types of flooring removal, including working with aviation customers to divert carpet and other materials from inside airplanes. In total, ReCover has donated enough carpet to cover more than 5,000 professional American football fields.
Through programs like ReCover, Mohawk works to implement a true model of circular economy into manufacturing and sustainability practices, helping to minimize the flooring industry’s environmental impact.
